     Concept of Rural Development

 The term Rural Development has been associated with agricultural development for a long time. 

 In recent years, the argument arose that agriculture is by no means the only possible occupation for rural people. 

 This has led to the emergence of a broader view of rural development. 

 Different definititon of rural development within this broader framework abounds in literature.

Generally, rural development constitutes a part of overall development strategies. 

 For that reason, the theory of rural development is derived from the general theory of development. 

 However, due to the peculiar character of rural areas, specific programmes and strategies are usually designed to address the problem of underdevelopment and poverty (Ekpo and Olaniyi,1995). 

 The concept of rural development embraced by most countries connotes a process through which rural poverty is alleviated by sustained increase in the productivity and incomes of low-income rural workers and households (World Bank, 1975: 17).

 According to Lele (1975), rural development implies improving the living standard of the mass of the low-income population residing in rural areas and making the process of development self-sustaining. 

 This definition indicates clearly that rural development is associated with changes in social and economic structure, institution relationship of the people in the rural areas.

 There are different Approaches(Theories and Models) to Rural Developed and the notable ones include the following;
  • Internal Combustion Theory,
  • Balanced Growth Theory,
  • Dual Economy Model,
  • The Diffusion Model,
  • Integrated Development Model,
  • Urban Development Model,
  • High Input Pay Theory,
  • Area Development Model,
  • Industrial Development Model, and
  • Sectoral Development Model
