 Should we try to make more money, to develop better friendships, to acquire more material wealth, to be more charitable, or to promote justice? 

Different people including Parents, Friends, and Religious leaders, may tell us very different things; one friend may tell us that it is most important to get ahead at any cost(even if it involves killing human being for the goal being pursued), while another may tell us that it is our moral obligation to promote the well-being of all people. 

How do we figure out what we should do?

What is Moral Philosophy or Ethics?

According to Prof. Asiegbu, Moral Philosophy or Ethics is all about the best way to live life. It is the branch of philosophy that rationally investigates questions concerning the best way to live life.

 Ethics or moral philosophy is about the sort of goals a person should have(or set for him/herself) and how other people should be treated by us.
According to Wikipedia, Ethics or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that systematizes, defends, and recommends concepts of right and wrong conduct. The field of ethics(along with aesthetics) concerns matters of value, and thus comprises the branch of philosophy called axiology.

Every society has its own customs and normal ways of life. The society teaches its younger ones or children to act according to its customs, and people in the society expect and require that other people behave according to those customs and standards. 

These customs can be considered to tell people how to live, what to do, what sort of person to be, and how to evaluate other people. 

Acting and living in these ways is considered within the society to be the best way of life.

 According to Wikipedia, Ethics seeks to resolve questions of human morality by defining concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice and crime. As a field of intellectual inquiry, moral philosophy also is related to the fields of moral psychology, descriptive ethics, and value theory.

  • If a person leams how to live and what to do from his society, why do ethical and moral issues arise? 
  • Why does anyone ever think about questions of ethics?

Three major areas of study within ethics recognized today are:

Meta ethics

Concerning the theoretical meaning and reference of moral propositions, and how their true values (if any) can be determined

Normative ethics

Concerning the practical means of determining a moral course of action


Applied ethics

Concerning what a person is obligated (or permitted) to do in a specific situation or a particular domain of action.
